MSMAS attend and support ‘Aid for Japan’ in London, a relief event in support of the victims of the recent Earthquake-Tsunami in Japan…

Kyoshi Payne, Renshi Terashima plus Sensei’s Franco & Wakeford all took to the stage at the Conway Hall today in central London to support this event.


The Event was opened by Helen McCarthy the Award-winning writer, responsible for 500 Essential Anime and Manga Cross-Stitch amongst others, who also curated and presented a film season commemorating the 80th Anniversary of Osamu Tezuka’s birth in November 2008, plus presented another for the 20th Anniversary of his death at the Barbican Cinema in London.

Then MSMAS took to the stage, with Kyoshi Payne giving a lecture interspersed with practical demonstrations of Iaijutsu, Iaido, Kenjutsu, Kendo, plus some Aikido and Tessen…

This was followed by Masa playing the violin and Hibiki the shamisen which he plays internationally, including performances in Poland and South Korea.

This was followed by an ‘Enka’ performance by Claudia Anderson who has been passionate about Enka ever since starting to learn Japanese seven years ago. At this event she sings to express her heartfelt feelings towards those who have lost their lives, their families and their homes from the March 11 Earthquake…

‘Kaikyo’, a Taiko drumming group based in London then played traditional songs learnt from Teachers in Japan such as Tomida and Igarashi Sensei. Their main aim is to have fun whilst keeping the root of ‘Wadaiko’.

Then followed Lectures and talks by Akemi Solloway Tanaka on Bushido and the Tea Ceremony, Shinto and about the formation of the ‘Aid For Japan’ charity, plus her wish to help the orphans from the recent tragedy in Japan.

As well as a ‘Bring And Buy’, Origami by Sabeena Qadir, Japanese Food and Drink and various Workshops to learn about Japanese culture first hand.

The Calligraphy Workshop was led by Kashuu, a UK based Master of Japanese calligraphy, who presented and demonstrated calligraphy writing with donations going to Japan Tsunami Survivors.

Finally, a wealth of dealers attended, including United Publications, The Japan Centre, Chris Katsui, Japan Catering, Kei Tange and Kelly-Louise Kimber, all with a wide range of items for sale including DVDs, T-Shirts, Prints, Books, Art, Manga, Food plus an assortment of Japanese-themed goods.
