MSMAS hold Karate Session at Honbu Dojo....

Teachers at this Session included a 5th Dan, assisted by two 2nd Dans, all 3 of whom already train at MSMAS in other disciplines ......

As with all MSMAS events this was a FREE and real ‘Fun Session’ that was open to all MSMAS Members....

This Session was led by three existing MSMAS Members, all also Karate YuDansha; Archie Grassom 5th Dan, Georgie Grassom 2nd Dan and Steve Tovee 2nd Dan.

The Session was attended by a mixture of other MSMAS YuDansha and Members from the various other discipline sections at MSMAS, Judo, Aikido, Iaido & Kendo.

The Karate style offered was Shukokai, derived from the Shito-ryu system, one of the main styles to have evolved from Okinawa and later transferred to Japan.

The way of Karate meaning ‘Empty Hand’, was explained starting with how to make a correct fist, a fundamental and integral building block of the discipline. This was then taken to the next stage and encompassed the correct understanding of the dynamics and body mechanics required to produce maximum impact; later put into practice using specially designed impact pads.

From learning to strike correctly the session was then steered towards learning how to block, counter attack, restrain with strikes and arm locks. Various self-defence techniques were explored and a thorough discussion and explanation of the various correct distance and reaction times for each technique was explained and demonstrated. The students were actively encouraged to experiment with each technique to witness firsthand the merits of each technique and the ease of its application.

The Session flew by and was concluded by a demonstration of the Kata ‘Seienchin’ by Georgie plus a few words of guidance and practical advice from Kyoshi Roger to all.

Everyone left with much ‘food for thought’, recognising that there is indeed a common thread that unites all the disciplines of Bushido Zanshin.

Another Session is planned for the New Year, so watch this space…
