MSMAS FREE Judo recognised by BJA @

The 'Free Judo' at MSMAS is backed by Nicola Fairbrother, retired former GB World Judo Champion, as MSMAS continue to offer 'free' training for youngsters aged 8/18 years across Sussex...

Nicola Fairbrother has been a long-time advocate of Mid Sussex Martial Arts School’s free Judo programme which was introduced back in 2008 to enable all youngsters aged from 8 to 18 to practice for free.

“This is a great programme and one that I support wholly,” said the 1992 Barcelona Olympics silver medallist.

“I know how much it cost me - well, I should say how much it cost my parents - to keep me going in judo when I was younger.”

The 1993 World Champion and three-time European Champion - widely regarded as one of Britain’s greatest ever female fighters - believes Founder & Coach Roger Payne deserves credit for sustaining the programme.

“I have to offer my congratulations to Roger and his team for maintaining the programme and ensuring all youngsters have a great opportunity to try and progress in the sport.”

As Mid Sussex Martial Arts School enters its third decade of activity, the free sessions continue, fully funded by the Tenshin Kan Youth Foundation.

MSMAS has also enjoyed a rich spell on the competition circuit in 2010, with 8 County Champions and have 14 County Squad places.

Founder and Coach Roger Payne said:

“We’ve been very successful again this year in competitions and with the programme we recognise the need to attract and develop new judoka.”

To apply for FREE Judo, request an application form by contacting Roger at or by calling 01444 318422.
