MSMAS Players Medal at the ‘2010 British Judo Championships’ to take National Title for 4th year in succession!

This year the 2010 'British Judo Championships' were once again held at iceSheffield, in Sheffield over the weekend of the 9th – 10th October 2010.....

Following on from the reinstatement of Area Trials as the entry process for the 2009 British Championships, all British Championships now use this method of entry and are the only selection criteria for the British Championship events.

As such, the top 4 Players in each weight category and age band were eligible to enter after the Trials.

The 2 x MSMAS Players who qualified were:

Shelley Jackson ~ # 2 Ranked ~ England Junior Women Over 78kgs

Martyn Woodhead ~ # 3 Ranked ~ England Cadet Boys Over 90kgs

First to compete on the Saturday 9/10 was 14 year old Martyn Woodhead, who enjoyed 4 straight wins through to the Gold, taking the ‘National Title’ yet again, this being his 4th year running!

Four Contests

1. First against a 128kg Player who won Gold at ‘Heart of England’ over 100kgs last month - Martyn won by Wazari from counter, Yuko from Kouchi Gari plus two Shido

2. Straight Ippon win by Ouchi Gari

3. Martyn down by two penalties, took this win with an excellent Urenage for another Ippon

4. Another straight Ippon, this time by Uchi Mata.

Martyn has now secured 4 x National Titles in a row and wore his MSMAS Gi proudly at the Medal Ceremony.

Then on the Sunday 10/10 Shelley Jackson competed, she again enjoyed 3 straight wins for a place in the Finals plus a chance for the Gold and the Title. However, this was not to be, with Shelley having to settle for Silver, after her only loss on the day.

Four Contests

1. Ippon win with Uchi Mata in about 2/3 minutes.
2. Down by 2 x Shido’s, then came back with a Kesa Gatame hold making the opponent tap out for Ippon !!
3. 2 x Wazari throw for another win by Ippon !
4. In the Final, Shelley's opponent was very fast, Shelley losing to her by a Hari Goshi/Tai Otoshi type technique ...

This was the last time Shelley can compete at the British Championships, as next year she will be too old!
Personally I think this was a great result for her to come away with !!

Commenting afterwards, Roger Payne, Judo Coach & MSMAS Founder:

“Once again MSMAS Judo Players were able to show their competitiveness on the National Stage, taking Gold and Silver at the highest level."
