MSMAS is saddened by the passing of James Shears (aged 35) ....

James, a Firefighter and well respected 2nd Dan Judoka from the Western Area was killed at Shirley Towers, Southampton whilst carrying out his firefighter duties.

James played Judo with his brothers Gary, Stephen, Chas and his dad all at the Wessex Club where he was a dedicated and popular member.

He was once Junior National Champion and represented his Country and the West at under 66 kgs

James was the current World Firefighter Champion after defending his title from the previous year at 66 kgs.

Wessex Club coach and Dorset Chairman Mick Kunzi said:

“He was an outstanding player, renowned for throwing much bigger players with his own ko-uchi setup and finishing with a tio-toshi.”

Our thoughts are of course with his family at this devastating time, plus some of own Members who are themselves Firefighters....
