MSMAS Junior Novice & Improver Judo Players compete & medal at Tournament in Kent....

Another great day for MSMAS Novice Junior Judo Players ~ 4 Gold, 3 Silver, 6 Bronze and a 'Spirit of Judo' Award...

With Shelley Jackson on hand as 'Coach for the Day', our 13 strong MSMAS Novice Judo Team took to the Mats, many for the first time with great results:

'Competitive Judo' & 'The Mid Sussex Martial Arts School'

At MSMAS 'competitive Judo' Medal success is simply seen as a 'by product' of our well established MSMAS training methods, not the reason for Judo training itself.

Unlike other Dojos where ego may reign supreme, at MSMAS we never forget that Judo was created by Dr Jigoro Kano as a Martial Art suitable for 'education'.

Even today it still incorporates the core values and benefits of any worthwhile Martial Art.

Values now so often missing in modern day 'sport' Judo clubs, educational establishments and unhappily it also now appears in society in general.

The virtues of dedication, perseverance, self-discipline, respect and co-ordination, so often lacking in modern day Clubs, focused on competition .....
MSMAS recalls Mochizuki Sensei's perceptive observation, made in the 1930's:
"One situation leading to delinquency involves a young person dropping out of his group of friends on a sports team. Some coaches are only interested in training team members in the question of winning and losing. They pay no attention to those who drop out because they are only interested in winning. In sports there is no place for the weaker or the less competent. Personally, I would rather see various sports transformed into Martial Arts, so that they become more concerned with spiritual development and the prevention of bad behavior. They should be more concerned with developing young people who are no trouble to their parents, who get along well with their siblings, and with promoting good relations between husbands and wives."
Now Jigoro Kano's own words on 'Judo & The Olympic Games' made in 1936: (Quote courtesy of John Pluckrose, BJA Senior Dan Grading Examiner)
" My view on the matter at present is rather passive. If it be the desire of other member countries I have no objection, but I do not feel inclined to take any initiative. For one thing, Judo in reality is not a mere sport or game. I regard it as a principle of life, art and science. Games are so strongly flavoured with nationalism that it is possible to be influenced by it and to develop 'Contest Judo', a retrograde form as ju-jutsu was before the Kodokan Judo was founded. All things connected with it should be directed to its ultimate object ~ 'The Benefit of Humanity'. Success or a satisfactory result of joining the Olympic Games would much depend on the degree of understanding of Judo by other participating countries. "
Even Jim Bregman, President of the U.S. Judo Association has said:
" Medal production isn't the measure of Judo's success. The measure of Judo's success is how we train our children to behave and to strive to better themselves. The real benefit of Judo is character development. "
Therefore, at MSMAS, our eye will always be on the overall development of our Members, irrespective of their competitive success and/or ability or otherwise....
It is that focus, we believe, what sets MSMAS apart from others .....

Not the fact that our all Juniors & Youth Judo Players also train absolutkey FREE OF CHARGE...
