MSMAS attend and work with WSCC to support London 2012 'Open Day' ..........

MSMAS were once again selected to support ‘West Sussex County Council', this time an 'Open Weekend' over 24-26 July, called 'London 2012', being held in advance of the Olympics.....

A number of the MSMAS current 'Judo Champions' were on hand 'on the day', including Martyn Woodhead, just one of our 'up and coming' Juniors.....

Although MSMAS also included demonstrations of: Judo, Aikido, Iaido & Kendo.

Martyn began his Judo in 2003 with the Mid Sussex Martial Arts School under the instruction of Catherine Payne, the daughter of Kyoshi Roger Payne.

Her enthusiasm and European competition experience ensured that Martyn got the best start on his path into Martial Arts. Constantly supported by a team of experienced martial artists at the Dojo, his confidence began to grow and his technical ability slowly started to develop.

In 2005 Martyn decided that he wanted to compete in Judo competitions.

Following success at local, low grade, competitions he began to train for more demanding events.

Martyn’s Sensei, Kyoshi Roger Payne decided in December 2006 that he was ready to enter the National “A” Band Championships which Martyn won in the last second of the final fight with an Ippon (maximum score win).

Since that time Martyn has never looked back.  With many hours of coaching and a great deal of encouragement from MSMAS Students and senior Yudansha (Black belts alike), he has become:

 British National Champion
 British Schools Judo Association Individual Champion
 Heart of England Champion
 North West Area Champion
 Midland Area Champion
 South of England Champion

Late in 2008 at the age of just 12, Martyn gained an 'England Judo Squad' place following his Gold medal success at the '2008 British Championships' (formerly National Age Banded) by winning all of his bouts, each within 1 minute, again all with straight Ippon (maximum score) wins.

Being undefeated in competition since 2006, his Coaching Team decided that Martyn needed to begin the process of preparing for under 16’s and Youth competitions.  He became ‘Under 16’ Junior Sussex Champion in April of this year and followed it quickly by being part of the Gold winning Sussex Squad at the Inter County Team Championships a month later.

In his most recent competition in June 2009, Martyn showed that the individualised coaching strategies employed by MSMAS Instructors had definitely paid dividends as he won Gold at the renowned ‘Kent International’ Competition beating the current under 16 heavyweight England Champion on his way to an outstanding victory in the Final.

Martyn’s current ambition is to eventually become good enough to win the Senior British Open, secure a place in the Great Britain Squad and represent his Country at future International Competitions maybe, one day, even the Olympics!

Thanks to other MSMAS Members:
