MSMAS attend Japanese Art Festival to demonstrate traditional Martial Arts...

Kyoshi Payne led and coordinated the 'Bushido Day' held at the Japanese Art Festival on March 1st by holding Martial Arts demonstrations throughout the day.....

Held at the Richmond Adult Community College in Surrey, UK, Akemi Solloway was the main organiser of this Japanese Art Festival.

A Lecturer of Japanese culture and a daughter of an old Samurai family it is her aim to present authentic Japanese culture in an accessible and enjoyable manner.

In addition to Akemi, the core supporters of this festival were AJAMCA, the Anglo-Japanese Anime, Manga and Culture Association, the School of Japanese Language and Culture and of course The Mid Sussex Martial Arts School (Tenshin Kan Dojo UK).

MSMAS therefore demonstrated Iaido, Kendo, Aikido & Judo with a final Session to show the interdependence of each on the other in Budo.

On the same site was a café which was the venue for meet-up activities by a number of Japan Societies and other groups at the Festival.

Members of various Japan Societies, as well as people who have been to Japan on one of Akemi's Study Tours, including the new Study Manga and Anime at School in Japan Tour, were able to meet up in the café during the two-days to catch up, reminisce and enjoy Japanese drinks, snacks, obento and sushi.

In the friendly atmosphere of this event, were like-minded people, many interesting things to see and do and the chance to take part in further activities in the UK and Japan.

The Manga and Anime Art Exhibition is an official event of Japan-UK 150, celebrating 150 years of friendship between the UK and Japan, also perhaps to be included in the Cultural Olympiad, which is ongoing from Autumn 2008 until the actual Olympic Games in London in 2012.
