‘On Top of the World!’

Chris Sharp, a heavyweight Judo Black Belt competitor, and Member of The Mid Sussex Martial Arts School, located just outside Hayward’s Heath, recently added a 70-mile walk to his personal training regime, in preparation for his participation at Judo Competitions in 2008.

Sounds simple enough, but Chris added an extra dimension to his ‘walk’, by using it to trek to the Base Camp of Everest, located at over 17,600 ft, 5,360 m high in Nepal.

This trek, normally used by climbers during their ascent and descent of the mountain, and used for acclimatization, in order to reduce the risks and severity of altitude sickness, allowed Chris the aerobic training he sought.

Chris said: “There is no greater mountain than Everest. My walk followed in the footsteps of many of the great climbing parties. I first trekked through Sherpa country, passing cultivated fields and small villages, the followed the Dudh Kosi, before the real hard work began, the climb up to Namche Bazaar. Above the tree line the scenery was stark, but spectacular, especially the incredible monastery at Thyangboche, which is set against the backdrop of Ama Dablam, Everest itself many of the other huge, snow-capped peaks. With time for acclimatisation enroute, my goal was the Everest Base Camp on the Khumbu glacier, plus the opportunity to climb Kala Pattar for some breathtaking views.”

Roger Payne, Judo Coach at The Mid Sussex Martial Arts School commented:

“Chris has been a fantastic Student of Judo at the School over many years, originally joining us as a Junior. Now, as a Senior, this year alone he has taken Medals at nearly every major Judo Tournament he has entered, plus being placed 5th at the ‘British Open’, an event open to all the top International Players from around the globe. Knowing that in 2008 he has certain events in mind, his latest piece of personal preparation came as no surprise, as Chris has always pushed himself to be the best he can be, a virtue I look for in every Member at The Mid Sussex Martial Arts School.”
