MSMAS secures another 52 x Gee Mats for an additional Training Area...

MSMAS is delighted to have acquired another 52 Geemats (35 green & 17 red), to form an area of 8m x 13m for our new Judo Training Area...

Gee Mat is Britain's longest established manufacturer and distributor of Judo Mats.

Judo mats were originally made in Japan from rice straw compressed into hard biscuits known as Tatami and covered with various jute materials. The Judoka (Judo players) liked these mats because they gave the necessary resilience between well-practised break fall and the sprung floor.

Although they were suitable for the permanent Dojo, they were very heavy and not suitable for lifting and moving because the straw broke up easily. With the general increase in interest of Judo there was a requirement for mats that could be stored away when not in use and could be laid quickly and effectively.

In 1970 the Gee Mat was developed and is now accepted as the standard for local authorities in the UK. Since its emergence, Gee Mat has been selected as the principle mat area for many prestigious tournaments, including the British Open Championships since 1984, the 1995 European Judo Championships, 2001 USA Judo Championships, 2002 Commonwealth Games and MSMAS.
