MSMAS Kendo 2008 Review & 2009 resolutions...

A personal message from Shuichi Terashima Sensei, Kendo Teacher at MSMAS...

Firstly I would like to thank all at MSMAS who made the great effort to come to the Kendo Sessions.

I have no doubt that I would not have been as successful in our great achievements without the strong dedication and commitment of all at MSMAS.

Here is my brief review of the training this year and to make some new resolutions for the next.

In 2008, training begun with a small number of people. Having said that, the small group were all selected prior, so I was not worried in pursuing hard and tough training. They all came back with my strong Budo sprit, since I had left the Budo world for a while.

Another good point was that after Summer we had yet more new people join us.

All of them were and are still fully committed to learn the rigorous manner of Budo.

They have all made me really proud of being a Teacher to them.

Additionally, my thanks to James Bibby for the 'special warm ups', as I am getting more confident that I will be able to apply even more traditional Kendo training into our practices (another set of hell courses!!).

However, we have not really focused on the one thing which is very essential in learning Budo. That is to switch off your mind 無心!!  Sometimes, I can feel too much 'existence' from you !!

This is not easy to explain verbally, the best thing is to come and have that experience through training.

For this reason the next resolution of our Sessions will be that YOU are going to beat YOURSELVES.

It means that we are going to pursue 無心.

Of course we will have tough times, but also smiles and laughter too !

Finally, I would like to thank Roger Kyoshi for all his support of our new Kendo classes plus wish all of you a nice Xmas and New Year.

I am also looking forward to seeing you all again on 5th of January.

Best regards
寺島 周一

PS The class of 5th of January will be a special training (国取り合戦) for everyone in armour and non armour. I won’t tell you about it now… Please look forward to it!
