MSMAS Judo appoint 2 new Judo Sempai...

On obtaining competitive 1st Kyu Senior Judo rank within the BJA it has become the tradition at MSMAS to be appointed a Judo Sempai..

As such, with effect from last night's Senior Judo Session, both Allan Smith and Shelley Jackson have now been appointed.

1)    Allan Smith:

Allan started Judo aged 8.

As he moved up the Junior Grades he started competing in as many Tournaments as he could and from 5th Mon medalled every time. When an 8th Mon he entered the ‘Sussex Trials’ where he took Silver and for the next 5 years managed to medal on each occasion. However, following the ‘Southern Area’ at Crystal Palace, he retired from Junior Judo as an 18th Mon.

Then aged 18 he returned to Judo to take a Senior Grading and with 3 contests, all finished with straight Ippons, was awarded his 2nd Kyu.

Then in 1997 Allan joined the Army and left Judo once again. However, his first posting was to a unit with a Judo club. The Instructor running the club was also in the Army Squad and represented the under 78kgs Category. At that time that was also Allan’s category and having beaten this Instructor in the lead up, then failed to turn up, as promised, to give him a lift, so missed out on the actual Trials themselves completely! (The Instructor said he ‘forgot’, Allan left the Club….)

After leaving the Army, Allan returned to Judo moving to 1st Kyu with 3 contests, all finished again with straight Ippons and later entered the ‘Hampshire’, to take Gold, and is now seeking his Dan Grade.

Allan will soon join our Coaching Team at MSMAS to assist with our ever growing Junior Mats, where his Competition experience will be utilised to the full.

2)    Shelley Jackson.

Shelley has always had a keen interest in Martial Arts.

It all began back in 2001, when, after many years she had finally worn her Parents to let her try it out.

As such, her mother found some Judo lessons. Shelley liked it and enjoyed the lessons very much, but those lessons did not last long for her due to my poor health.

However, soon after, the Doctors allowed her to train again.

However, this time she went to another Session ~ Shelley said "These lessons were very different".

For a start she had a new Coach, a girl, young, more organised, her name was Catherine.  That was when she got her first Gi.  How she loved that Gi, she really felt she was born to wear it.
Her MSMAS Judo career began in January 2002, on a very wet and cold night at the MSMAS Honbu Dojo with lots of other Juniors to copy, lots of Seniors to keep an eye on her and where she gained her BJA Licence so that she could grade.
Slowly she started with some Competitions locally.

Encouraged all the way, the more confident she became, the better she became.

She then worked her way up the belt colours, sometimes very quickly, other times very slowly.  All the time, encouragement and support from MSMAS. During her time at MSMAS she has been totally supported, travelling to attend competitions, meeting up with other Judo players, Coaches, Refs. etc from other clubs, just by being at the Competitions.
This year, Shelley has had her best year ever, plus also her last year as a Junior, now 16 and considered a 'Senior'.

This year, still as a Junior, she attended and indeed medalled at many Competitions, like the ‘Heart of England’ in Birmingham and ‘National Age Banded’ in Sheffield.

Indeed in 2008 she achieved a 99% medal success rate, so far !!

She now has new challenges as a Senior Player ~ a whole new ‘Way’ for her.

After her appointment as a Judo Sempai, now a 1st Kyu Senior, she said:

"I am very proud of my new Title and hope to serve it well."
