MSMAS announce Charity for 2009 to be 'Help for Heroes'...

Every year MSMAS Members support a specific Charity, in 2009 it will be 'Help for Heroes', a Charity set up to try and make a real difference to the lives of our wounded service men and women ....

A bit about our 2009 Charity and the people that run it ..

'Help For Heroes' was the idea of Appeal Chairman Bryn Parry and a group of friends and relations, many of who have connections with serving servicemen and women. Bryn and his wife Emma wanted to do something to help the wounded and came up with the idea of a sponsored bike ride. They mentioned it to some friends who mentioned it to some more friends and suddenly Help For Heroes was born and growing fast. A flurry of visits to various offices led to the campaign being blessed by the head of the army, Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Richard Dannatt.

Bryn Parry, Co Founder and Chief Executive served for ten years in The Royal Green Jackets before leaving the army in 1985 to become a cartoonist. He is the author and illustrator of nine books and his company, Bryn Parry Studios produce a wide range of gift products.

Emma Parry, Co Founder and Managing Director of Help for Heroes Ltd has coped with being married to Bryn for 26 years and since 1985 has been fully involved with running their business.  Apart from book-keeping (not her strong point!) she has done pretty much every job going and now concentrates on sourcing products for Bryn's designs.  They have three children in their twenties and their son has just joined 2 Rifles.

Mark Elliott, Director of Operations spent 25 Years in the Grenadier Guards, followed by 8 years in the Insurance Industry.  He is currently CEO of the National Organisation of Beaters and Pickers Up. He also spends what time he has left over running Marathons (and other sporting challenges!) playing cricket and shooting / beating.  Mark is married to Claire and lives (with Botham his dog) in Amesbury Wilts.  His Daughter Laura has just graduated from University and is living in Nottingham.

Belinda Mitchell, National Coordinator, has been married to John for 35 years.  Formerly in the Diplomatic Service, now living in Hampshire, they have three grown-up sons. Before joining Help for Heroes, Belinda was for 17 years a Senior Manager with a clothing company.  She likes gardening, hill-walking and chocolate.

Ruth Farrell, Head of Events is married to a serving officer in 1 Royal Horse Artillery and is based in Tidworth. Previously involved in organising more corporate based events, she is now greatly enjoying supporting H4H fundraising events and challenges across the country and as far as she is concerned, the crazier the idea the better!!

Lucy Ludlow, Events, Working for H4H appealed to me as I have friends in the armed forces and feel the charity is helping to ensure our wounded soldiers get the best help, support and futures they deserve. Can’t wait to get actively involved in the events taking place for Help for Heroes and already signed up for the next bike ride...lycra at the ready!!

Katie Cherrett, Office, worked in the accounts department at Hoover Ltd for 3 years before realizing my true calling.. To help man the phones at Help for Heroes. So I packed my bags in sunny Wales and have now set up home in Tidworth….. A bit scary, but felt a little lucky as my boyfriend Chad (seriously) only lives in Andover. My family is mainly army based so I am extremely proud and privileged to take on my role here at H4H.

Amanda Davies, Finance is married to Lee for 16 years. Lee is a serving officer  with 2 Royal Welsh based in Tidworth. Have 2 daughters, Megan 15, and Bethan 13. Worked for 3 years prior to H4H supporting the families of 2 Royal Welsh and organizing outings etc. Before that, studied extensively and stayed at home bringing up the children.

Latest News:

Help for Heroes has become, in the words of the Prime Minister, a ‘National Institution’ and it is hard to believe it only started in October 2007. Since then H4H has raised £1 million a month to help support our wounded servicemen and women injured in the current conflicts. H4H have done that with your help. This has really been something very simple, a group of friends who wanted to do something to help, that message communicated to others who have joined in and made this the success it so obviously is.

This is not about politics, there is no need to criticise or complain, why moan about it being dark when you can light a candle? H4H may have started something but thousands have joined to make this what it is today. This is about ordinary decent people wanting to to do their bit to help, to raise money by joining in and so creating something that has become rather wonderful.

Over the last few weeks H4H have seen this support building into a a huge, unstoppable wave. The RFU hosted the Rugby Challenge Match at Twickenham and 52,000 cheered on the Rugby Legends and raised over £1.3m. A business man decided to do his bit and paid £1.5m to fly with the RAF’s Red Arrows. The finalists of Simon Cowell’s X Factor joined in and sung Hero which has become the fastest selling record of the decade. Even James Bond has signed up with over £500,000 raised for H4H and the Poppy appeal at the Royal Premier of Quantum of Solace.

There are thousands of events happening all over the country as people decide to show their support, people who are prepared to get on and do something, to light a candle in the dark.

All at H4H are staggered by the support and would like to say thank you to all of you who have made this work..... Now let's keep it going..
