MSMAS Aikidoka welcome Mark Hayes-Watkins (Daito Ryu)

Mark Hayes-Watkins leads a study group in the UK on the techniques of Daito-Ryu under the direction of Certa Shihan (Overseas Director of Foreign Development) for the Nihon Daito Ryu Aikibudo Daito Kai School.

In June, 2002  the Nihon Daito Ryu Aikibudo Daito Kai International Association was founded, having its Dojo in Abashiri, Hokkaido. Created by Shigemitsu Kato, its purpose is to continue the development and diffusion of the Art learnt from Takeda Tokimune, Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu.  The International Association is present in many countries other than Japan:

Today all the techniques of Aikijujutsu are being studied and practiced exactly as they were in the Feudal Era of Japan, when they were trained by the Aizu clan bushi. Every technique has been passed on and kept secret inside the Takeda family, until almost 10 years ago.

The evening began nomally, then Mark took to the floor to show some suwari waza to the entire class followed later by some tachi waza and then some 'weapons work' to the MSMAS YuDansaha.

MSMAS Aikido then presented a short demonstration of Aikido & Iaido to our guests.

The evening closed with a small presentation to Kyoshi Payne from Mark and his colleague of a book written by Certa Shihan on Daito Ryu.

Extracts from an Email received by MSMAS from Mark the next day:

"I got back late and then couldn't sleep as I tried to digest the experience of the evening at your Dojo.

It was truly a humbling experience and I was quite over whelmed by the respect that you and your students showed us.

I so hope we repaid the courtesy.

Your students are a real testament to you.
Both Nick and I were inspired and motivated by the experience and as a Dojo Leader, we have something to aspire to.

Once again, many thanks
Mark "

& from Nick...

"I'd like to personally thank you and your Aikido class for the warmest of welcomes and a memorable evening.

I found it refreshing experience stepping inside a permanent Dojo with all of its traditions and formality.

I hope we will have a chance to train together again.

Once again, Many thanks

Nick Bailey"
